Regardless if you’re new to the game or a returning player looking to create a new main character, there are a variety of quests in Oldschool Runescape (OSRS) that can reduce the amount of early level grinding by hours. Completing any, or ideally all, of the quests below is highly recommended for the vast amounts of experience each offers to new players.
Below, you’ll find the top ten best OSRS quests that a new player can do to vastly improve their character’s stats in a short period of time.
1. Waterfall Quest
Rewards: 13,750 Strength XP and 13,750 Attack XP
First up on the list is the single most recommended quest for any brand new player, Waterfall Quest.
Doing this quest on a brand new level 3 character will instantly raise both your strength and attack level from 1 to 30 in each. There are also no combat requirements, so you don’t have to worry about training before attempting the quest. The quest isn’t too long either. However, you will likely want to bring food, as you have to pass level 86 Fire Giants and a level 84 Moss Giant during the quest.
2. Witch’s House
Rewards: 6,325 Hitpoints XP
Next up on the list is another very beginner-friendly quest you can do early on, Witch’s House.
Witch’s House is highly recommended to do after Waterfall Quest, as you do not receive any Hitpoints XP during the previous quest. It’s a short and simple quest that won’t take you much effort at all. However, you will want to equip the best weapon you can and bring food, since you’ll be fighting a series of 4 monsters back to back. If you came here on a brand new character right after Waterfall Quest, your Hitpoints would go from 10 to 24 immediately upon completion of this short quest.
3. Grand Tree
Rewards: 7,900 Agility XP, 18,400 Attack XP, and 2,150 Magic XP
Next up, we have another quest that provides a ton of XP for relatively little effort on your part, Grand Tree.
Grand Tree provides over 26,000 XP across three skills after its completion. The quest isn’t terribly long, and is a prerequisite for Monkey Madness, which is a mid level quest that grants a total of 110,000 XP across your melee and Hitpoints levels. One downside to this one is that you will have to fight a level 172 Black Demon. However, you’ll be happy to know that this can be done from an early level regardless, as the demon is easily safe-spotted using Ranged, Magic, or melee halberds.
4. The Knight’s Sword
Rewards: 12,750 Smithing XP
The fourth quest on this list so far, The Knight’s Sword is another quest that gives a ton of early XP. This one is also free to play, so everyone can take advantage of it immediately.
This quest does require you to run past level 57 Ice Warriors and 53 Ice Giants, so a little food is recommended to those with low Hitpoints.
Completing this quest before touching any smithing whatsoever is highly recommended. You’ll go from level 1 to level 29 smithing after you finish The Knight’s Sword, skipping all bronze and most of iron smithing in the process. As the quest isn’t terribly long either, you’ll be saving hours of time that you would have spent on early smithing levels, too.
5. The Dig Site
Rewards: 15,300 Mining XP and 2,000 Herblore XP
Next up is another quest that will save you from hours of grinding out skilling XP, the Dig Site. In addition, no combat is required of you throughout this quest.
This particular quest does require you to unlock Herblore through the Druidic Ritual quest and raise it to level 10 first. However, no mining level is required before starting the Dig Site. Thus, completion of the Dig Site before doing any leveling of the Mining skill is recommended. You’ll go straight from level 1 to level 31 upon the completion of this quest.
6. Tree Gnome Village
Rewards: 11,450 Attack XP
Next up on the list is the sixth crucial quest for all beginners to complete, Tree Gnome Village. This one does require you to defeat a level 112 Khazard Warlord, however he is a lot easier than his combat level would suggest.
Otherwise, this particular quest grants a whole heap of Attack XP. It’s also another requirement for Monkey Madness, which you’ll definitely want to complete as soon as you reach the lower mid levels. Tree Gnome Village isn’t a difficult quest, and it’s quick enough to complete even if your combat stats aren’t great.
7. Animal Magnetism
Rewards: 1,000 Crafting XP, 1,000 Fletching XP, 1,000 Slayer XP, and 2500 Woodcutting XP
In seventh, we have the next beginner quest that all new players should complete as soon as possible. Animal Magnetism is a very important quest to complete if you intend to level Ranged at all.
Though the XP rewards aren’t the greatest compared to many other quests on this list, Ava’s Device is crucial for reducing the cost of ranging. It automatically picks up your fired ammo the majority of the time. This results in far less clicking to retrieve them over time, which means more XP for you in the long run. The requirements for this quest are a little on the hefty side for newbies, but it’s well worth it regardless.
8. Dragon Slayer
Rewards: 18,650 Strength XP and 18,650 Defense XP
Next up in eighth is perhaps the only remotely challenging quest for brand new players, Dragon Slayer. This one does require 32 Quest Points, so you may have a bit of a grind prior to starting this one.
Dragon Slayer is also the first quest on the list to be a fairly long one. However, the rewards are definitely also hefty. Not only do you need completion of this one to even equip rune and dragon platebodies, or green d’hide bodies, but it also grants nearly 40,000 in two of your melee stats for a fairly simple boss. You likely won’t have much trouble with the dragon after completion of at least a few of the above quests.
9. Holy Grail
Rewards: 11,000 Prayer XP and 15,3000 Defence XP
Ninth quest on the list is the Holy Grail quest. Though this one also requires completion of Merlin’s Crystal to start, it’s well worth the completion of both for the massive early prayer experience.
The quest does require you to defeat a level 120 Black Knight Titan using melee. This is relatively simple even with limited combat stats and food, as you can hit and run the Titan repetitively until he dies.
If you haven’t leveled prayer at all up to this point, completing Holy Grail will take you straight from 1 to 28 Prayer.
10. The Tourist Trap
Rewards: Your Choice of 4,650 XP in Two Skills (or 9,300 XP in one). Limited to Smithing, Thieving, Agility, and Fletching.
Last on this particular list is the desert quest, the Tourist Trap.
You will have to defeat a level 47 Mercenary in the quest in order to complete this one.
This quest is fantastic for getting a head start in either Agility or Thieving, or both, depending on your own preference. Using both XP options in a single skill will result in leveling straight from 1 to 26. Alternatively, choosing both offers a quick head start to level 20 in both skills. In either case, we recommend not choosing Fletching or Smithing, as there are better ways to level each more easily than the previous two skills.
